James Day really enjoys LLO's Cardi Fit class

By John Davis

Community Relations Director

Unless a vacation takes him out of town, it’s almost impossible not to find James Day at the front of Cardio Fit. The 79-year-old Ole Miss graduate is a dedicated participant in the class taught twice a week by Kelly Waite.

“I very seldom miss a day, unless I’m on vacation or out of town,” Day said. “Kelly is an excellent instructor. She is very nice. She is great with everybody, and shows us what to do when you get started. The music that she has is always fun and enthusiastic.”

Day grew up in Stone County in the small town of Wiggins. He moved to Oxford from New Orleans, and he’s been taking part in Leisure Lifestyle classes since the early fall of 2015. He Started with Total Body Fitness, then moved to Cardio Fit and yoga. He also makes sure to sign up and participate in water aerobics at the pool during the summer months.

Day is a heart patient, so Cardio Fit’s upbeat music was very good for him in terms of exercise routine. Day said he was a little sore after the first couple of the workouts since classes resumed on May 3.

“I could feel it in my muscles for the next day or two,” Day said before adding. “Everybody is just so proud to be back. There was a concern that (LLO) wasn’t coming back, but now everyone is back to hugging. It’s good to see everybody back.”

Instructor Kelly Waite has observed Day take her class on a routine basis ever since she was as an intern with the OPC in 2018.

“He is always helpful. He always ask if he can get the bands out, wherever he can,” Waite said. “He told me that he loved my class. He also told me that my class was the first time he danced since he lost his wife. I thought that was sweet. He’s great to have in the class. He is outgoing, and he enjoys the social aspect of the class.”

LLO classes were off for 15 months, and during the pandemic, Day took part in Betsy Banner’s yoga class that was broadcast over Zoom.

“That really saved a whole bunch of us. There was probably between 20 and 25 signed up,” Day said. “For a senior like me, the social part of it is just as important as the physical part. Some of us are isolated. My wife died six years ago with cancer. I had a dog and she died last November. Being isolated is not good for the seniors in the community. We really enjoy the social part of it.”

For those that may be apprehensive about taking part in a class like Cardio Fit, Day has some great advice. He added that he would love to see more men take part in the various exercise classes.

“They may think that it’s too rigorous for them, but if they would just come and just audit the class, and try it one time, I think they would see that it’s just right,” Day said. “The instructors will tell you that this is not a pain thing. It’s no pain, no pain as Stevi (Self) puts it. If it hurts, don’t do it. All we’re trying to do is to keep our limbs and joints mobile through exercise.”

When Day isn’t at LLO class, he follows Ole Miss sports. He really enjoys watching the Rebels play football and visiting The Grove in the fall.

“I’ve got four or five tents there with friends. You can get on the bus downtown and ride it right to the Grove and visit friends,” said Day, who started at Ole Miss in 1959 and graduated in 1964 with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
