New sideline cheer class begins Feb. 5

Life is filled with opportunities, and in the case of Kristi Yancy, coaching the youth cheerleading participants at the Oxford Park Commission was an opportunity that was too much to pass up.

Yancy knows what it’s like to prepare a routine, a performance and master cheers for an audience. She amassed countless hours as a cheerleader, dance performer and vocalist growing up. She attended cheer camps hosted at Lafayette when she was in elementary school, and continued that role through middle school and the early parts of high school.

Her jump into coaching OPC participants first started in softball this past fall with her 9-year-old daughter. When a volunteer was needed to lead the cheer squad that her 7-year-old signed up for, Yancy stepped up to the plate and assumed that leadership role.

“Coaching is something I love to do,” said Yancy, who balanced fall softball games and practices and the cheer that was paired with the flag football season. “I had no problem doing cheer as long as I could do both sports.”

Her role as cheer coach not only continued through the current youth basketball season, but it spawned a new Fundamental Sideline Cheer class that will be hosted inside the Coach Howell Center starting on February 5.

“This class basically gets them prepped and designed to be a sideline cheerleader. When they’re ready to try out at school, they have a background behind them and know what to expect,” said Yancy, who plans to instruct participants in 25 to 30 different cheers. “This class will help develop strong leadership skills, build confidence through performing in front of a crowd, foster a sense of teamwork, improve physical fitness with demanding routines and be a positive representative for your school and community. Cheerleading can help you grow as a person by pushing your limits while having fun and connecting with others. Cheerleading can, and will boost the self esteem of a participant.”

Yancy added that she wanted to help push her girls to be their best, and not just in cheerleading, but in every aspect of their lives.

Registration for Fundamental Sideline Cheer is now open. You can sign up through the OPC website, oxfordparkcommission.com, or stop into both centers Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and let the staff help sign you up in person.
