Brandon Williams is ready to greet you

By John Davis

Community Relations Director

There doesn’t seem to be a moment in the day where Brandon Williams doesn’t have a smile on his face. Many in the community have already met Williams, the man behind the information desk at the new activity center.

Williams, who recently graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in Sports Management, has been associated with the Oxford Commission for the past three years. He started as a part-time worker when he first enrolled, arriving from Mississippi Community College where he played basketball.

“My sister used to go to Ole Miss. She graduated in 2014,” Williams said. “I came down here and got a feel for it, for the city and sports, too. Plus, my favorite color is blue. I love the city of Oxford. It’s original.”

Becoming a part of the OPC staff, getting to know and appreciate the city more, allowed Williams to feel like he did as he grew up in Greenville. As a part-time worker, Williams helped with the youth basketball, baseball, softball and flag football programs.

“I started out working with Jared (Barkley) on softball and then went to Nathan (John) for baseball and flag football and then on to work with Felisa (Bonner) for basketball,” Williams said. “The rest, as they say, is history. I started looking at other things outside before this opportunity came up to stay with the OPC. I couldn’t say no to the job offer because I love everybody as a family. I felt very comfortable at this work place.”

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has met Williams to agree with his assessment that he is a person who loves people.

“Actually, working here made me become a people person. My personality is more in between outgoing and not. I wouldn’t mind staying at home, but I’m outgoing on the job site and when I’m around sports,” Williams said. “I love going to sports events, going to see basketball games, NBA, Ole Miss.”

Williams loves to cheer for the Houston Rockets and James Harden in the NBA. His favorite NFL team are the Los Angeles Rams, and he didn’t just jump on the band wagon.

“Marshall Faulk was my favorite player growing up. I’ve been a fan ever since 2000, that first Super Bowl when we beat Steve McNair (and the Tennessee Titans),” Williams said. “My favorite baseball team is the Yankees. I’m willing to take upon any challenge in Pickleball if someone will keep score.”

As for his new role in the center, Williams said he liked the idea of being around kids.
“My mom has a day care and I came from working at the YMCA child care in Greenville. I like to see kids come in and interact with sports and just have fun,” Williams said. “I know that sports can bring a lot of people together. I like to see kids come in and come out and I get to talk to parents, to interact with them. That’s what I’m most excited about my new job.”
