OXFORD PARK COMMISSION

       RETIRED & SENOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

     LEISURE LIFESTYLES OF OXFORD

“Health and Wellness through Lifetime Recreation”

Leisure Lifestyles of Oxford is a new program that has been established through the cooperative efforts of the Oxford Park Commission and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. The overall mission is to provide leisure and recreational outlets that meet the physical, social and health/wellness needs of all citizens of Oxford. We will focus on a variety of recreational programming that allows individuals to experience new adventures, promote personal talents, share learning experiences and skills, and most of all, encourage everyone to become, and stay, involved in recreational outlets for a healthy way of living.

The approach for providing scheduled classes/activity groups will be designed to encourage all individuals to be a part of creating, shaping, conducting and giving your input in to how programs function. This method allows for your suggestions regarding types of activities offered, group sizes, times and dates, level of activities, and personnel who may be interested in conducting or assisting with programs. As you can see, we need “you” to be a part of Leisure Lifestyles. You can choose to be our participant, instructor, spectator, designer, coordinator, and most of all, our inspiration.

The programming that we would like to see would be inclusive to all persons regardless of age, activity level, need for assistive devices, or other special considerations that might cause a person concerns related to personal participation. This style of inclusion will not reduce the overall intent of these recreational outlets. Recreation and leisure outlets should always allow each individual to be able to seek adventure, excitement, have a sense of well-being, provide a place to demonstrate our talents, share time with others of similar and differing interests, improve our social and physical well-being, and most of all, laugh and have fun.

Some of the programs and activities that are being suggested for the schedule for this spring are: Genealogy, Line Dancing, Computer Class, and Low Impact Exercise. Other activities/classes may include: Ballroom Dancing, Drama/Theater, and Landscaping/Water Feature Workshop, Keyboard (Piano), Film/Photography, Flea Market, Bike Club, Comedy Group, Zumba, Road-Runner Walkers/Joggers, Foreign Language Class, Sports (golf, tennis, softball, bocce, ping pong), Table Top Games, Art, Ropes Course, Social Events (pot-luck, dances, movies, shopping, prom night, on-the-town), Hairstyling (men and women), Writing Course (poetry, journals, newspapers, novels), E-Buddies, Bird Watching, Music (all types), Adventure Trips/Activities (canoeing, hiking, rifelry, Iron Man/Woman, Senior Olympics, primitive camping, archery, swimming/water aerobics), Trips (Old Country Roads, Casino, Town Swap, Shopping). This list needs to grow, with your help, it can.

FOR INFORMATION: Deb Helms at 662-236-1157 or dhelms@oxfordms.net

We are very blessed to live in a community, such as Oxford, where we have so many resources that may allow for us to find just the right program to meet our personal needs. Mr. Mike Young, Director of Instructional Programs, has already provided a major stepping stone for the addition of Leisure Lifestyles by providing recreational programming for individuals from youth through senior citizens. With his guidance and your input and participation, we will make every effort to make Leisure Lifestyles of Oxford the best of the rest.

I look forward to meeting with any and all of you who have ideas, questions, or suggestions that will make “your” program happen. Please feel free to call me, Deb Helms, at my office 662.236.1157; email at dhelms@oxfordms.net; or drop by my office at the back entrance of City Hall. If I am out of the office, you may check with the RSVP office or the Oxford Park Commission Office to leave a message.
